QURAN
.
Of all the acclaimed masterpieces that the world has seen, nothing can be compared to the book known as the Qur’an. Millions have become Muslims upon simply hearing a verse from this amazing book, yet still the majority knows nothing of it. The Qur’an is the Final Revelation from the Creator to humanity. It was revealed in the year 610 CE to the Prophet Muhammed (Peace be upon him), and completed over a period of 23 years. These 23 years of revelation resulted in a book which comprised of 114 chapters and 6,666 verses. All of this was to become the primary source of law for the whole of mankind to live and die by.
.
The impact of this book is such that Allah says :
.
“Had We revealed this Qur’an upon a mountain, surely you would have seen it humble itself and crumble out of the fear of Allah. Such are the parables We put forward to mankind so that they may reflect”
.
(Quran, Chapter/Surah 59 – Al-Hashr : Verse 21)
.
If I had revealed this Qur’an onto a mountain, you would have seen, O Messenger, that mountain, despite its solidity, humbled and fearful due to the extreme fear of Allah. This is because of the scolding admonitions and severe warnings it contains. These analogies that I draw for the people are so that perhaps they use their intelligence and take heed of the lessons and advices its verses contain.
.
He is Allah, the one whom there is no true deity except Him; He is the Knower of the absent and the present: nothing is hidden from Him; the Benevolent of the world and the afterlife and their Merciful: His mercy encompasses the worlds; the Master; the Pure and Sacred from every deficiency; the Faultless from every defect; The Corroborator of His messengers with manifest signs; the Observer of the actions of His servants; the Almighty whom no one can overpower; the Omnipotent who controls everything through His power, the Imperious. Pure and glorified is He from the idols and other things the idolaters ascribe to Him.
.
He is the Creator who created everything; the Originator of things; the Fashioner of His creations according to His wishes. For Him may He be glorified are the most beautiful names which contain His lofty attributes. Everything in the heavens and on earth glorifies Him from every deficiency. He is the Almighty whom no one can overpower; the Wise in His creation, legislation and decree.
(al-Hashr:21-24)
.
However, it seems as if the hearts of the people have become harder then the mountains which tower above us. When the Qur’an is recited or even mentioned, people turn away with disgust. In the West, this is primarily due to the negative exposure from the media. It has resulted in many non-Muslims not even wanting to hear the name of this amazing book. Muslims too, have become hardhearted because of the cultural influences of the West. Many young Muslims perceive the Qur’an to be nothing more then an old wrapped up book, which comes off the highest shelf once a year during Ramadan!
.
If people were to truly reflect upon this book, they would realise that nothing in this world is quite the same. So why should this claim be accepted over others? Why should the Qur’an be given precedence over the likes of the Bible, the Gita[2] or the Granth Sahib[3] ? The following reasons will inshallah give an indication as to why this book deserves the attention of all humanity.
.
Preservation
.
“There is probably in the world no other book which has remained twelve centuries with so pure a text”. Writing 200 years ago, these are the words of the famous English critic of Islam, Sir William Muir. But as Muslims we do not need Williarn Muir to tell us this. 1400 years ago, the Muslims accepted this reality when Allah revealed to them:
.
“Indeed it is We who have sent down the reminder (the Qur’an), and indeed it is Us who shall preserve it”
(QURAN, CHAPTER/SURAH 15 – AL-HIJR : VERSE 9)
.
I alone revealed this Qur’an to the heart of Muhammad (peace be upon him) as a reminder for people. I will guard the Qur’an from anything being added to it or subtracted from it, or anything in it being exchanged or altered.
.
O Messenger, I sent before you messengers to prior groups of disbelievers and they belied them. So you are not an exceptional messenger from the perspective of being made out as a liar by your people.
.
Previous groups of disbelievers did not receive a messenger except that they belied and ridiculed him.
(Al-Hijr:9-11)
.
These words have proved true to this very day. From the moment the first words were revealed to Muhammed (Peace be upon him), to this very day, every single letter and word of the Qur’an has remained unchanged.
.
Before Islam, all the revelations sent were not given this divine assurance. This is why we find that books like the Bible are riddled with corruption and inaccuracies. It is well known that man has tampered with the Bible to the extent that annually different versions are produced to suit trends and desires[4]. In fact this has been going on for so long that it is almost impossible to see what of the words of the Creator are left, if any!
.
With the Qur’an it is the exact opposite. The contents of this amazing book are stored in the hearts of millions of Muslims worldwide. Children as young as 12 have memorized the entire book in its original language, Arabic. There is no other religious scripture on earth which is orally preserved in its original language by so many and over such a period of time, without having been tampered somewhere along the line. The Bible is a prime example of this. Many Christians believe that English is the divine language of the Bible. However Jesus (peace be upon him) spoke Aramaic. From Aramaic, his life-story was translated into Hebrew. From Hebrew it was translated into Greek. From Greek to Latin, and then finally from Latin to English! There has not been a single vicar, priest or layman in recorded history who has even memorised the Bible in English, let alone the Aramaic! As Muslims we believe the Qur’an can only be in the language it was revealed in, i.e. Arabic. Anything else is a translation and not the divine words of the Creator. A true test of this divine preservation would be to burn all the books and manuscripts in existence, to see which can return as it was. The Qur’an would be the only book which would return in its original form, letter for letter, word for word.
.
Many Christians say that the Qur’anic claim of preservation needs to be backed-up by manuscript evidence. For us this is not a necessary criteria, but in order to quell the doubts, the Muslims have ample proof. Two copies of the Qur’an are in existence which date back to the Third Caliph Uthmaan (may Allah be please with him), 20 years after the death of the Prophet (Peace be upon him). These two copies are to be found in the Topkapi museum, Istanbul, Turkey and in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. The Tashkent copy is thought to have been the personal copy of the Caliph as it still contains stains of his blood, which was shed when he was murdered whilst reading it. Any copy of the Qur’an which is compared to these copies, will show that there is not a single difference between what we have today and what was in existence 1400 years ago. Thus Allah’s promise holds true.
.
No Mistakes
.
Man as a creature is fallible. For this reason anything which is produced by him will naturally have faults. With the Qur’an, such a notion cannot even be considered as it is from the one who is Infallible. In fact Allah clarifies this matter beautifully when he says:
.
“Do they not consider the Qur’an? Had it been from other then Allah surely they would have found much discrepancies within it”
.
(Quran, Chapter/Surah 4 – An-Nisa : Verse82)
.
Why do these people not reflect over the Qur’an and study it until they realise that it contains no differences or inconsistency, so that they can accept the truth of what you brought? Had it been from anyone other than Allah, they would have found inconsistencies in its rulings and differences in its meanings.
(An-Nisa:82)
.
Throughout history many have tried to scrutinize and search the Qur’an for mistakes and errors. To this day no one has been able to bring a shred of proof showing that this book is not from Allah. Some Christians have even called it the work of the Devil because the book affected them so much when they read it! With other scriptures, contradictions, mistakes and absurdities are constantly present. When people contrast these ambiguities with the Qur’an, it often results in the acceptance of this faultless book.
.
The Arabic Language
.
Upon hearing Qur’anic recitation, you may be rather startled. Besides hearing the reciter of the prayer, you often hear people in the background sobbing and wailing heavily. So what is it that makes these people cry so much? It is nothing more then the beauty and eloquence of this book which moves millions to tears. This beauty is expressed in the language of Arabic. Allah says :
.
“Indeed We have revealed this as an Arabic Qur’an so that you may understand”
(QURAN, CHAPTER/SURAH 12 – YUSUF : VERSE 2)
.
I have revealed the Qur’an in the language of the Arabs, so that you, O Arabs, can understand its meanings.
.
By revealing this Qur’an to you, I narrate, O Messenger, the best of stories, in their accuracy, the soundness of their words and their eloquence. Before I revealed it, you were unaware of these stories, without any knowledge of them.
(Yusuf:2-3
.
At the time of the Prophet (Peace be upon him) three modes of expression were used. There was normal speech, the speech of the soothsayer and poetry. The Arabs were the masters of their language, and poetry was their cultural highlight. Arabic poetry is split into 16 categories, each separate from the other. When the Qur’an was proclaimed to the Arabs it amazed them beyond all limits. It was like nothing they had ever heard before. It did not fit into the 16 categories of poetry, nor was it the speech of a soothsayer, and it certainly was not normal speech. If it was not all these, then it could only be the word of Allah.
.
The eloquence and majesty of the early chapters of the Qur’an moved many to tears, and the beautiful Qur’anic Arabic converted millions of Arabs in the Middle-East. Not only did the Qur’an effect the lives of these Arabs, but it also transformed their culture. Even today, no serious study of the Arabic language is possible without reference to this book.
.
The reaction of some pagans was that they accused Muhammed (Peace be upon him) of being a soothsayer and a madman. In order to silence them, Allah issued a challenge. At first he asked them to produce a book like the Qur’an. When it could not be done, Allah asked them to produce ten chapters like it. When this too could not be done Allah finally stated:
.
“And if you are in doubt as to what We have revealed to Our slave, then produce a chapter like it”
.
(Quran, Chapter/Surah 2 – Al-Baqarah : Verse 23)
.
The Challenge in the Qur’an
.
Allah challenged mankind and jinn to come with a book like the Qur’an, but they could not. Allah said: “Say, If mankind and the jinn gathered in order to produce the like of this Qur’an, they could not produce the like of it, even if they were to each other assistants”. [The Qur‟an 17:88]
.
Say, O Messenger: If all of humankind and jinns united to bring the like of this Qur’an which was revealed to you, in its eloquence, excellent sequence and pure style, they will never be able to bring anything like it, even if they were to all assist and help one another.
.
And I have explained to people in this Qur’an and brought all types of advice, reminders, commands, prohibitions and stories they can take lessons from, in the hope they will believe. But most people have refused except to deny this Qur’an.
(al-Isra:88-89)
..
When they could not produce like the Qur’an, Allah challenged them to bring one chapters like it, but they could not
.
Allah challenges those who have any doubt about the Qur’an revealed to His servant,Muhammad (peace be upon him), to produce a chapter just like it, and to call their helpers, if they are truthful about what they say.
.
If they are unable to do so — and they will never be able to do it — they should be mindful of the fire of Hell, which burns with people who deserve the torment, and with the idols which they used to worship instead of Allah: punishing both the idol-worshipers and what they worshiped. The fire of Hell has been prepared as a punishment for the disbelievers.
(al-Baqarah:23-24)
.
When they could not produce like the Qur’an, Allah challenged them to bring ten chapters like it, but they could not. Allah said: “Or do they say, “He invented it”? Say, “Then bring ten chapters like it that have been invented and call upon [for assistance] whomever you can besides Allah, if you should be truthful”.
[The Qur‟an 11:13)
.
Do the idolaters say that Muhammad made up the Qur’an, and that it is not revelation from Allah? Allah tells the Messenger (peace and blessing be upon him) to challenge them to write ten similar surahs themselves like the Qur’an, and to call upon whomever they could call upon to help them to do this, if they were telling the truth in claiming that the Qur’an was fabricated.
.
If they do not bring what the Messenger challenges them to – and they are unable to do it! – then the believers should know with certainty that the Qur’an is revealed from Allah by His knowledge to His Messenger, and that it is not fabricated, and that there is no true god except for Him. Allah asks whether you surrender to Him in devotion after these conclusive proofs?
(Hud:13-14)
.
When they could not produce like ten chapters of it, Allah challenged them to bring one chapter like it, but they could not. Allah said: “Or do they say [about the Prophet], “He invented it?” Say, “Then bring forth a chapter like it and call upon [for assistance] whomever you can besides Allah, if you should be truthful”. [The Qur’an 10:38]
..
Or do these idolaters say that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) came up with the Qur’an himself claiming that it is from Allah? Say to them O Messenger, ‘If I as a human being like you, have been able to come up with it, then you also should bring a chapter like it, and call upon whomever you wish to assist you, if you are telling the truth in claiming that the Qur’an is not really from Allah. But you have not be able to do so, even though you are talented and eloquent in the language — showing you that the Qur’an has been revealed by Allah.
.
Yet the disbelievers do not respond to these challenges, but reject the Qur’an before even thinking about it, without understanding it, and the punishment about which they have been warned has not yet come to them, although it is near!. In the same way, past communities rejected the truth, and Allah sent His punishment upon them. So reflect upon the end of these communities who rejected the truth, because the were destroyed by Allah.
(Yunus:38-39)
..
Allah made it clear to all mankind that it is impossible for anyone to produce like the Qur’an. Allah said: “And it was not [possible] for this Qur’an to be produced by other than Allah , but [it is] a confirmation of what was before it and a detailed explanation of the [former] Scripture, about which there is no doubt, from the Lord of the worlds”. [The Qur‟an 10:37]
.
This Qur’an, miraculous in its eloquence and law-giving, could not be fabricated, and it cannot be attributed to anyone but Allah, because people are not capable of coming up with anything similar to it. Rather, it confirms the scriptures that were revealed before it, and clarifies the laws in it, and there is no doubt that it was revealed by the Lord of all created things.
(Yunus:37)
.
The smallest chapter in the Qur’an is only 3 verses long (Chapter 108). The pagans at the time of the Prophet (Peace be upon him) could not even produce something as small as this, and since then no one else has completed this impossible task. All of this is in light of the fact that the Prophet Muhammed (Peace be upon him) could not read or write, thus refuting those who say that the Qur’an was his own handiwork.
.
The Qur’an is the Final book of revelation. After it there will be no more. However, many have tried to deny this by producing their own new versions of the Qur’an. Among them have been the two false prophets, Musailama[5] and Ghulam Ahmed[6]. Many Chapters in the Qur’an are named after animals, such as the Ant, Spider etc. Musailama tried to copy this, and went about creating a chapter in his book called the Weasel! In Arabic it is called Al-Wabl and it hardly causes people to be struck in awe! On the other hand Ghulam Ahmed, the ‘British stooge’, claimed to receive revelation in cockney English!! Such foolishness could never compare to the beauty of the Qur’an with its clear and beautiful Arabic language.
.
Science
.
Over the past few decades much interest has been shown in the scientific content of the Qur’an. Scientific data which has been discovered in recent times, has been existent in this book for 1400 years. In fact the very common origin of this universe is stated clearly by Allah, the Most High:
.
“Do not the disbelievers see that the heavens and the earth were joined together, then We parted them. And We made from water every living thing. Will they then not believe?”
.
(Quran, Chapter/Surah 21 – Al-Anbiya : Verse 30)
.
Do those who disbelieved in Allah not know that the heavens and the earth were joint without any gap in between that rain should come down from it, then I split them apart? And I made every animal and plant from the water that comes down from the sky. Do they not consider this and believe in Allah alone?
.
And I made firm mountains on earth, so that it does not shake those on its surface. I made in it wide paths and ways, so that they may find their way in their journeys towards their objectives.
.
And I made the sky a roof protected from falling and without any pillar, and protected from stealing words. But the idolaters turn away and do not consider the signs in the sky, such as the sun and moon.
.
Allah alone is the One Who created the night for relaxation, created the day for earning one’s livelihood, created the sun as a sign of day, and the moon as a sign of night. The sun and moon both run in their specific orbits, without moving away or side-tracking.
.
O Messenger, I have not given eternity in this life to any human before you. So if your life comes to an end in this life and you pass away, will they live forever after you? Never.
.
Every believing and disbelieving soul will taste death in the world. And I test you, O mankind, in the worldly life through duties, blessings and hardships, then after your death you shall be returned to Me alone and nobody else, then I shall reward you for your deeds.
(Al-Anbiya:30-35)
.
This parting of the heavens and the earth is more commonly known to scientists as the ‘big bang’. It is also a fact that life originated from water and that every living cell is composed of 85% water. Without water life is impossible.
.
The mountains of the earth, like icebergs, have roots going deep into the ground. This ensures that they will not topple with their extreme heights – this is known as ‘isostasy’. In this way the mountains are like the stakes which are used to anchor a tent. But this fact is already known to us when Allah says:
.
“Have We not made the earth an expanse and the mountains stakes?” (Quran, Chapter/Surah 78 – An-Naba : Verse 6-7)
.
Did I not make the earth spread out evenly for them so that it is fit for them to live on?
.
And did I not put mountains on it like pegs to stop it from shaking?
(An-Naba:6-7).
.
“Allah has cast into the ground mountains standing firm so that it does not shake with you” (Quran, Chapter/Surah 31 – Luqman : Verse 10)
.
Allah, may He be glorified, created the heavens which are raised without any pillars, pitched mountains on Earth firmly, so that they do not shake with you, dispersed animals over the earth, and sent down rainfall from the sky, causing the earth to grow all kinds of delightful plants, from which both the humans and animals benefit.
(Luqman:10)
.
The embryological data which is found in the Qur’an is astounding. Allah describes the formation of a baby inside the womb from the very moment the sperm reaches the ovum, to its formation into a human. This data, which was only discovered about 30 years ago, has amazed many Western scientists. Amongst them is Dr Keith Moore from the University of Toronto, Canada. Dr Moore[7] is a recognized authority in embryological circles, with his university text book being set as a standard text in many universities throughout the world. When Dr Moore was asked as to how this information in the Qur’an could be explained, he replied: “It could only have been divinely revealed”.
.
History
.
The Qur’an is a book of historical accuracy. One accuracy which has corrected the mistakes of many Christians and historians, is the fate of the pharaoh who drowned in the Red Sea whilst pursuing Moses. The Biblical story would have us believe that the matter ended when the pharaoh drowned. But the Qur’an explains further. When he was drowning the pharaoh confessed his faith in Allah. But it was too late, and Allah promised him:
.
“This day We shall preserve you in your body, so that you may be a sign for those who come after you. But indeed many of mankind are heedless of Our signs”
.
(Quran, Chapter/Surah 10 –  Yunus : Verse 92)
.
So today I will take you out, O Pharaoh, from the sea and place you on a high piece of ground so that those who come after you can take a lesson from you. But many people are unmindful of My proof and evidence indicating My power, and they do not reflect over them.
(Surah Yunus:92)
.
In 1898 the tombs of various pharaohs were discovered in the Valley of the Kings, in Egypt. In 1975 Dr Maurice Bucaille, an eminent French surgeon was allowed to examine the mummified bodies of Rameses II and the pharaoh who had pursued Moses – Merneptah. Dr Bucaille discovered that Merneptah had received very violent blows to several parts of his body and had suffered a massive heart attack. Amazingly, these are the results which occur when someone dies from drowning! Thus Allah had saved the body of the transgressing pharaoh as a sign for all humanity.
.
For those who say that Muhammed (Peace be upon him) knew his history and wrote it in the Qur’an, the following shall prove otherwise. In the year 615 CE the Roman army was defeated by the Persians. About this event Allah revealed:
.
“The Romans have been defeated in the lowest land, but in a few years they shall be victorious again, within three to nine years. The decision of the matter, before and after, is only with Allah”
.
(Quran, Chapter/Surah Ar-Rum 30: Verse 24)
.
The Persians have defeated the Romans.
.
In the nearer lands of Levant. The Romans, after their defeat will be vitorious over them again.
.
Within a time period not before three years and not after ten. To Allah belongs the command, prior to the Roman’s victory and after it. And on the day the Romans defeat the Persians, the believers will be happy.
.
They will be happy because of the help of Allah being with the Romans due to them being the people of the book. Allah helps whoever He wishes against whoever He wishes; He is the Almighty who cannot be overcome, the Merciful towards His believing servants.
.
This victory was a promise from Allah, and with its fulfilment, the believers will increase in their conviction of Allah’s promise of victory being true. As for the majority of people, they do not understand this due to their disbelief.
.
They do not know faith and the rulings of the Shariah; they only know of the superficial matters of worldly life, related to earning a livelihood, whilst they turn away from the real life of the afterlife, not paying any attention to it.
(Ar-Rum:1-7)
.
The words of Allah proved true as the Persians were defeated at the battle of Issus, 7 years later in 622 CE. There is no possible way that Muhammed (Peace be upon him) could have known (if he wrote the Qur’an) that the Romans would be victorious. In fact he also did not know that the ‘lowest land’ at which the battle was fought was literally that. The battle in 615 CE was fought on the shores of the Dead Sea, the lowest point below sea level on earth, at 1300 ft.
.
A book with these credentials could only be from the Creator of the heavens and the earth. A book which we need to acquaint ourselves with. A book . . .
.
“. . . which has been revealed to you (O’ Muhammed) so that you may lead mankind out of the darkness and into the light”
.
(Quran, Chapter/Surah lbrahim 14 : Verse 1)
.
Alif Lam Ra, this is a book which I have revealed to you, so that you may lead people out of darkness and into light, by the will of their Lord, to the path of the Almighty, the Praiseworthy The discussion on similar letters has already passed in Surah Al-Baqarah. This Qur’an is a book that I revealed to you, O Messenger, so that you may remove people from disbelief, ignorance and misguidance to faith, knowledge and guidance – to the religion of Islam which is the way of Allah, the Mighty whom no one can overpower, the One Who deserves praise in everything.
.
Allah, to Whom alone belongs whatever is in the heavens, and to Whom alone belongs whatever is on earth. He alone is the One Who deserves to be worshipped and that nothing of His creation be associated as partner to Him. Those who disbelieved in Allah will received a severe punishment.
(Ibrahim:1-2)

7. Besides Dr Moore, there have been many other famous Western scientists who have accepted Islam. One of the most prominent was the famous French oceanographer, Jacques Yves Cousteau who has recently passed away. Cousteau was amazed at the accuracy of the Qur’anic statements regarding underwater activity and thus embraced Islam. As a result of his death, Cousteau’s life achievements have been highlighted in the Western media. However his acceptance of Islam was conveniently absent from the news-reports.

Why is the Quran important?
.
The Quran is the holy scripture in Islam, revealed directly from God. It is considered the speech of God, and it holds guidance for all of mankind within it. The Quran describes itself in its longest chapter: “This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allah” (Q. 2:2).
.
Alif Lam Mim – letters like these begin certain surahs of the Qur’an. Although they have no meaning in themselves, they do however have a purpose. Since there is divine wisdom contained in everything in the Qur’an, these letters point to the miracle of the Qur’an, made up of the letters which make up the words we speak. Therefore, when surahs begin with letters in this way, they are usually followed with a verse about the Qur’an, as we see in this surah.
This is the Qur’an, in which there is nothing of any doubt, neither in terms of its origin, nor in terms of its meaning. It is the word of Allah, guiding those who are mindful of Allah to the way that leads to Him.
They believe in the revelation that Allah sent down to you, O Prophet, and in that which He revealed to all the other prophets before you (peace be upon them), without distinction; and they have a definite belief in the Afterlife, with its rewards and punishments.
The people who possess these qualities are on the path of guidance, and will be successful in this world and the next, gaining what they desire and being saved from what they fear.
(Al-Baqarah:1-5)
.
What is written in the Quran is true, establishing many articles of faith for a Muslim, including the oneness of God, belief in an accounting and afterlife, belief in Prophets, angels, and more.
.
Why is the Quran in Arabic?
.
The Quran is in Arabic, as that is the language it was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) over 1400 years ago. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was an Arabic speaking man from Makkah. Thus, the Quran was revealed in the language known to its original recipients. In addition, Arabic is a beautiful, deep, and very poetic language.
Why is the Quran “sung”?
.
The Quran is recited, rather than sung. It is not comprised of lyrics, but ayat, or verses, revealed by God. There is an entire science dedicated to the recitation of the Quran and the way in which certain sounds and letters are elongated and pronounced. Hearing a beautiful Quranic recitation in Arabic is quite humbling and has a direct effect on the heart. In fact, one of the original Companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) named Umar had a change of heart regarding the entire religion of Islam upon hearing the scripture recited.
.
What does the word Quran mean?
.
The word Quran is derived from an Arabic root that means to recite. Linguistically, the word Quran means “the most recited.” This in itself is a miracle of the Quran because when it was revealed, the early Muslims did not know this would become the most often recited (and memorized!) book. There are many other names for the Quran as well, such as, Al-Kitaab (The Book), Al-Furqan (The Criterion), and Lawh Mahfuz (Preserved Tablet).
.
Is the Quran a Bible?
.
Muslims believe that both the Bible (in its original form) and the Quran are revelations from God. Within the texts, there are many similarities one finds, including the concept of monotheism, stories of Prophets, and moral values and actions. Just like the Bible is a religious scripture for Christians, the Quran is a religious scripture for Muslims. The Quran is not the Bible; rather, it is the final revelation from God, believed by Muslims to rectify any deviances that appeared over time in the previous scriptures due to man’s interference.
.
Is the Quran read from right to left?
.
Yes, the Quran is read from right to left because it is in the Arabic language, which is also read in that fashion.
.
Is the Quran God’s word?
.
Yes, the Quran is the word of God. It is the final scripture God revealed to mankind to correct any previous misunderstandings and deviances with a promise to remain preserved as is for eternity. God states in the Quran, “Verily We have revealed the Quran, and We will guard it” (Q. 15:9).
(Al-Hijr:9-11)
.
How does the Quran start?
.
The Quran begins with Surah Al-Fatiha, or The Opening Chapter. These few verses are very powerful, and recited multiple times a day by Muslims all around the world. Muslims recite this chapter of the Quran in every cycle of their prayer. Completing the absolute minimum requirement of the five daily prayers results in Surah Al-Fatiha’s recitation seventeen times. The verses talk about praising God and asking Him to provide guidance to the straight path. The translation is below:
.
“In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds. The Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful. Sovereign of the Day of Recompense. It is You we worship and You we ask for help. Guide us to the straight path. The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor, not of those who have evoked [Your] anger or of those who are astray” (Q. 1:1-7).
.
I begin by calling on Allah, Who is Ar-Rahman, the Merciful, and Ar-Rahim, the Compassionate. These last two names of Allah are derived from the Arabic word rahmah, which means mercy: proving the greatness and vastness of His Mercy and that His Mercy surrounds everything, and embraces all living beings. Every blessing is due to His mercy, and the believers receive the greatest mercy.
.
All praise belongs to Allah with regards to His essence, attributes and actions, because He is the Creator of everything. Everything belongs to Him and He is the disposer of their affairs; blessing individuals specifically and humans in general.
.
Two names of Allah, Ar-Rahman and Ar-Rahim, derived from the word rahmah, or mercy: indicating His mercy for creation, with the believers being the greatest recipients of it.
.
He is the Master of the day of Judgement, the day in which we will be brought back to life and repaid for what we have done, all of His creation will be held accountable for their actions and recompensed for them. On that day God will ask “To whom belongs the Kingdom today?” [Surah Ghafir: 16] No one, no matter how high his status, will answer, and then God will reply Himself, “to God, the One, the Overcomer” [Surah Ghafir: 16]
.
We worship and obey none except You; we associate no one with You, and from You alone do we ask for help in all our affairs. All goodness is in Your hand, and there is no helper except You.
.
Show and facilitate for us the right way, the path of submission to You which has no crookedness, and make us firm upon it
.
The same path as those of Your creation whom You have blessed with guidance, such as the prophets, the truthful, martyrs, and the righteous ones. What good companions these people make! Keep us away from the path of those who earned Your anger, who knew the truth and did not follow it – as was the case with the Israelites; and keep us away from the path of those who lost their way and were not guided, because they were neglectful in seeking the Truth and being guided by it — as was the case with the Christians.
(Al-Fatihah:1-7)

How does the Quran describe Jesus
.
Muslims believe Jesus to be one of the very beloved prophets of God. His story is mentioned a few times in the Quran, in which he is referred to as Isa ibn Maryam, or Jesus son of Mary. The Quran mentions his miraculous birth as well as his ability to speak as a newborn. Soon after the verses describing how he defends his mother’s chastity, the chapter named Maryam in the Quran continues:
.
“That is Jesus, the son of Mary—the word of truth about which they are in dispute. It is not [befitting] for Allah to take a son; exalted is He! When He decrees an affair, He only says to it, ‘Be,’ and it is. [Jesus said], ‘And indeed, Allah is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him. That is a straight path’” (Q. 19:34-36)
.
Qur’an, Surah Mariam (Mary), 19:16-36

Seclusion and the glad tidings to Mary
.
And mention, [O Muhammad], in the Book [the story of] Mary, when she withdrew from her family to a place toward the east. And she took, in seclusion from them, a screen. Then We sent to her Our Angel, and he represented himself to her as a well-proportioned man. She said, “Indeed, I seek refuge in the Most Merciful from you, [so leave me], if you should be fearing of God”. He said, “I am only the messenger of your Lord to give you [news of] a pure boy” (19:16-19).
.
And mention, O Messenger, in the book revealed to you the story of Mary (peace be upon her), when she moved away from her family and stayed separately in a place to their east.*
.
*Thus, she made for herself a veil from the people which would cover her, so that they cannot see her when she is worshipping her Lord. Then I sent Gabriel (peace be upon him) to her, thus he appeared to her in the form of a perfectly-formed human. So she thought he has a malicious intention towards her.*
.
*So when she saw him in the form of a perfectly-formed human heading towards her, she said: “I seek protection of the Merciful from you that any harm should come to me from you, if you are pious and fear Allah”.*
.
*Gabriel (peace be upon him) said: “I am not a human. I am only a Messenger from your Lord who He has sent to you for me to give you a good pure child”.*
(Maryam:16-19)
.
Mary was a virgin
..
She said, “How can I have a boy while no man has touched me and I have not been unchaste?” He said, “Thus [it will be]; your Lord says, ‘It is easy for Me, and We will make him a sign to the people and a mercy from Us. And it is a matter [already] decreed.’” So she conceived him, and she withdrew with him to a remote place (19: 20-22).
.
*Mary said surprisingly: “How can I have a child when neither a husband nor anyone else has come near me nor am I an adulteress that I should have a child?”*
.
*Gabriel said to her: “The matter is as you said, namely that no husband or anyone else has touched you nor are you an adulteress. However, your Lord said: ‘To create a child without a father is easy for Me. And it is so that the child granted to you is a sign for people of the power of Allah, and a mercy from Me to them, due to the good they will achieve through him. And the creation of this child of yours is a fixed decree from Allah and written in the Preserved Tablet’.*
.
*So she conceived him after the angel blew into her, then she withdrew with him to a place far from the people.*
(Maryam:20-22)
.
Delivery of Jesus
.
And the pains of childbirth drove her to the trunk of a palm tree. She said, “Oh, I wish I had died before this and was in oblivion, forgotten”. But he called her from below her, “Do not grieve; your Lord has provided beneath you a stream. And shake toward you the trunk of the palm tree; it will drop upon you ripe, fresh dates. So eat and drink and be contented. And if you see from among humanity anyone, say, ‘Indeed, I have vowed to the Most Merciful abstention, so I will not speak today to [any] man.’” Then she brought him to her people, carrying him. They said, “O Mary, you have certainly done a thing unprecedented”(19:23-27).
.
*And the pangs of childbirth struck her and made her take refuge by the trunk of a date tree. Mary said: “If only I had died before this day and I was something not even mentioned, so that bad is not thought of me”.*
.
*Then Gabriel(or baby jesus) called to her from the bottom of the valley: “Do not grieve. Your Lord has made for you a spring of water beneath you from which you can drink.*
.
*And hold the trunk of the tree and shake it; it will instantly drop fresh ripe dates on you.*
.
*So eat of the ripe dates, drink of the water, and be pleased with your child and do not grieve. And if you see any person who asks you regarding the child, say to him: ‘I have bound myself to silence for my Lord’s sake, so will not speak to any person today”.*
.
*Then Mary came carrying her child to her people. Her people said to her out of shock: “O Mary, you have committed a grave fabricated matter, by bringing a child without a father.*
(Maryam:23-27)
.
Justification of the Jesus’ birth
.
“O sister of Aaron, your father was not a man of evil, nor was your mother unchaste”. So she pointed to him. They said, “How can we speak to one who is in the cradle a child?”[Jesus] said, “Indeed, I am the servant of God. He has given me the Scripture and made me a prophet. And He has made me blessed wherever I am and has enjoined upon me prayer and alms as long as I remain alive and [made me] dutiful to my mother, and He has not made me a wretched tyrant. And peace is on me the day I was born and the day I will die and the day I am raised alive”. That is Jesus, the son of Mary – the word of truth about which they are in dispute(19: 28-34).
.
*O one who resembles Aaron (a righteous man) in worship, your father was not an adulterer nor was your mother. You are from a pure household known to be righteous, so how can you bring a child without a father?”*
.
*She pointed towards her son Jesus (peace be upon him) who was in the cradle. So the people said in surprise: “How can we talk to a child who is in the cradle?”*
.
*Jesus (peace be upon him) said: “I am the servant of Allah. He gave the Gospel and made me one of His prophets.*
.
*And He made me a great benefit for the servants wherever I am. And He ordered me to perform prayer and give Zakat for as long as I live.*
.
*And He made me righteous to my mother. And He did not make me arrogant towards the obedience of my Lord nor did He make me disobedient to her.*
.
*And safety from the satans and his helpers is on me on the day of my birth, the day of my death and the day I shall be raised on the Day of Judgment. The satan has no evil effect on me in th three frightening places”.*
.
*He who is described with these qualities is Jesus, son of Mary. And this discussion is the word of truth regarding him, not that which is said by the misguided who doubt and disagree in his affair.*
(Maryam:28-34)
.
God does not beget
.
It is not [befitting] for God to take a son; exalted is He! When He decrees an affair, He only says to it, “Be,” and it is. [Jesus said], “And indeed, God is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him. That is a straight path”(19:35-36).
.
*It does not befit Allah to have a son, exalted and free He is from this. When He intends something, it is enough for Him to say regarding this thing: Be, and it most definitely becomes. So He who is like this is free from having a son.*
.
*And Allah, may He be glorified, is both my Lord and your Lord, so make worship sincere for Him alone. This which I have mentioned to you is the straight path that leads to the pleasure of Allah.*
.
*But the factions of Jews and Christians differed regarding the matter of Jesus (peace be upon him). The Jews said about him that he is a magician. Some Christians said about him that he is the son of Allah. Woe to those who differ regarding him, from witnessing the great Day of Judgment, due to its scenes, reckoning and punishment.*
.
*How horrible is what they will hear and see on the Day of Judgment, and how severe it will be for them. And how strange will be their condition which you will see. However, the oppressors in this worldly life are clearly misguided from the straight path. They will not prepare for the afterlife until it will suddenly come to them whilst they are in their wrongdoing.*
(Maryam:35-38)
