THE JINN
.
All praise is due to Allah, the One who cures and gives health, the One who benefits and harms, the One, the Majestic, the One who is unique in His Oneness. He is the One who creates and to Him all things return. He created everything with His power, and arranged all affairs by His will. We testify that none has the right to be worshipped except Allah, and we testify that Muhammad is His slave and messenger. He conveyed the message, fulfilled his obligation, and strove for the sake of his Lord, so may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, his family, companions and all those who follow him until the Last Day.
.
Indeed the conscious and familiar world is known to a person’s soul; he is accustomed to it, and hence is only surprised by that which is new or strange. On the other hand a person is driven to explore that which is unknown and unseen to him, and for this reason the world of the jinn is a world that the soul wishes to learn about, and to know what has been mentioned regarding it from the texts of the Qur’an and Sunnah, and that which the scholars have mentioned in their books. It is for this reason that some scholars dedicated books to this topic and in particular to the possession of people by the jinn. Allah says:
.
”And verily, there were men among mankind who took shelter with the males among the jinn, but they (jinn) increased them (mankind) in sin and transgression”. (Surah Jinn, verse 6)
.
And that in the period of ignorance, some men from mankind used to seek protection in the jinn when they came to a frightening place. One of them would say: I seek protection in the leader of this valley from the evil of the foolish ones of his people. As a result, human beings became more afraid and terrified of the jinn.
.
And that humans thought as you did, O jinn, that Allah will not resurrect anyone after his death for the reckoning and recompense.
(Surah Al-Jinn:6-7)
.
From that which is well known and accepted is that a person is vulnerable to dangers and illnesses; very few people live their whole lives without afflictions. These afflictions do not befall a person except by the will of Allah, and due to His infinite wisdom which may or may not be known to the afflicted. For every affliction there is reward if that person is patient and seeks the reward from Allah. This is why the Prophet ﷺ said:
.
“How amazing is the affair of the believer. Verily, all his affairs are good for him;if some good comes to him he is grateful and that is better for him,and if some evil befalls him he is patient and that is better for him him.”
(Muslim)
.
However, this affliction may be prevented or lifted or eased by the will of Allah; this occurs when the Muslim takes the necessary steps to prevent such afflictions from befalling, We will learn about this in the course InShaAllah.
.
Why we should learn about this topic
.
This topic has its important, especially since the jinn are a living and intellectual creation who live with us on this earth and mix with us in our lives. For this reason they have been mentioned in the texts of the Qur’an and Sunnah. Indeed, the Qur’an has dedicated a whole Surah to them. This course then, is like a foundation in this topic. In it we have tried to mention everything with its evidence and we have left out that which is exaggerated by people and has no truth to it.
.
Indeed the knowledge of the plans and plots of Shaytan and his army from the impious and the evil jinn is a means of protecting oneself from their harm. This is done by fearing Allah and turning to Him, obeying His commands and refraining from His prohibitions, and reciting the necessary adhkar.
.
There is an increasing amount of people who are afflicted by psychological illnesses, epilepsy, magic and the evil eye. The consequences of these afflictions place the afflicted and their family in a very difficult situation.
.
The need to strengthen our faith (Iman) and our connection with Allah, for there is no refuge except with Allah, no dependence except upon Him, and no cure except from Him alone, for He is the one who possesses all cures, as He says: “And when l am ill, it is He who cures me”. (Surah al-Shu’ara’, verse 80)
.
“And when I am ill, He alone cures me from illness; there is no healer for me except Him.”
(Ash-Shu’ara:80)
..
JINN – The Reality
.
The world of the jinn is a different one from the worlds of mankind and the angels, but the jinn are similar to men in that they have intellect, willpower, and the ability to choose whether to do good or bad. They like men are also ordered with the worship of Allah alone, as Allah says:
.
And I (Allah) created not the jinn and mankind except that they should worship Me (Alone). (Surah al-Dhariyat, verse 56)
.
And I did not create jinns and men except for My worship alone. I did not create them to make a partner for Me.
.
I do not want any provision off them nor do I want them to feed Me.
.
Allah is the Provider for His servants, all of them are in need of His provision, He is the Supreme-Lord, Every Mighty, nothing is outside His ability. All of the jinns and men submit to His power (may He be glorified).
(Adh-Dhariyat:56-58)
.
The jinn differ from men in their nature and appearance. Their reality is that they are intellectual spirits with willpower like men, but with no physical substance. They are hidden from our senses, and cannot be seen in their true form, nor upon their true nature, but they have the ability to take different forms. They eat, marry, have offspring, and will be held to account for their actions in the hereafter.
.
Imam al-Shawkani said: “They are an intellectual and hidden being that is mostly from fire.” Also, it is not possible to see them in the original form in which they were created. Allah says: “O children of Adam! Let not shaytan deceive you as he got your parents (Adam and Hawwa) out of Paradise, stripping them of their raiments, to show them their private parts. Verily, he and his tribe see you from where you cannot see them. Verily, We made the shayatan Awliya (protectors and helpers) for those who believe not”. (Surah al-A’raf, verse 27)
.
O children of Adam, do not let Satan deceive you by making disobedience look beautiful to you, making you leave covering your nakedness with clothing, or leave the clothing of Mindfulness. Do not be deceived as he tricked your parents, making eating from the tree seem good to them, and the result of that was that he got them expelled from Paradise, and their nakedness became clear to them. Satan and his tribe watch and see you, and you cannot see or watch them, so always be on your guard against him and his tribe. Allah made the satans friends and helpers of those who do not have faith in Allah. As for those who have faith and do good, the satans have no way against them.
(Al-A’raf:27)
.
The jinn are less honourable and lower in standing than men
.
Shaykh Abu Bakr al-Jazairl said: Indeed the jinn, even the pious from amongst them are less honourable and lower in standing than men, for the Creator the Most High, has emphasised the honour of mankind in Surah al-Isra’: And indeed We have honoured the Children of Adam, and We have carried them on land and sea, and have provided them with al-Tayyibat (lawful good things), and have preferred them above many of those whom We have created with a marked preferment. (Surah al-Isra’, verse 70)
.
And I have honoured the children of Adam through intellect, making the angels prostrate to their father, and I subjugated for them the animals and vehicles that carry them on land, and the ships that carry them by sea. And I provided them with good food, drink, spouses and other things, and I granted them much virtue over much of My creation. They must be grateful therefore for Allah’s favours on them.
(al-Isra:70)
.
This prestige has not been mentioned for the jinn in any of the Holy Books, nor by the tongue of any of the Messengers, so from this, it is known that man is of a higher standing than jinn. This is also shown through the way the jinn feel weak and inferior in the presence of men. However, when men seek refuge with the jinn they feel superior and proud because of the way men glorify them, but the truth is the opposite; they only increase in tyranny and disbelief, as Allah mentions concerning them:
.
“And verily, there were men among mankind who took shelter with the males among the jinn, but they (jinn) increased them (mankind) in sin and transgression”.
(Surah Al-Jinn:6-7)
.
Another proof for this is that when men seek assistance from them and swear by them they immediately answer this call, due to the weakness and inferiority they feel in the presence of the righteous son of Adam who believes in Allah and worships Him alone. As for those of mankind who disbelieve in Allah, then the righteous of the jinn are better than them.
.
Indeed, the disbelievers are more astray than cattle, as Allah says: “They are only like cattle-nay, they are even further astray from the Path”. (Surah al-Furqan, verse 44)
.
Rather, do you – O Messenger – think that most of those whom you call towards Allah’s Oneness and obedience, hear with acceptance or understand the arguments and proofs? They are just like cattle in terms of their hearing, comprehension & understanding. Rather, they are further from the path than cattle are.
.
Have you – O Messenger – not seen how your Lord extends the shade on the surface of the earth. If He had willed to make it stand still without moving He could have done so. Then I made the sun an indicator for it, becoming long and short in accordance to it.
(Surah Al-Furqan:44-45)
.
The Reason they are called Jinn
.
They are known as jinn because they are invisible and hidden from the naked eye. They see men but men do not see them, as Allah says: Verily, he and his tribe see you from where you cannot see them. (Surah al-A‘raf, verse 27)
(Al-A’raf:27)
.
The point being that men cannot see the jinn in their original form, however they may see them in other forms, such as certain animals.
.
When were the Jinn Created?
.
The jinn were created before mankind as is mentioned in the clear text of the Qur’an:
.
And indeed, We created man from dried (sounding) clay of altered mud. And the jinn, we created aforetime from the smokeless flame of fire. (Surah al-Hijr, verse 26-27)
.
I created Adam from dried clay, if it is struck it sounds. This clay that he was created from is black and of an altered scent beacuse of the duration it has been left.
.
I created the father of the jinn from scolding fire before I created Adam (upon him be peace).
.
O Messenger, remember when Allah said to the angels and Iblis, who was with them: I will create a being from dried clay that rings when it is hit, it is black and of an altered scent.
.
If I fashion his image and perfect his creation then prostrate to him in obedience to My command and to greet him.
.
The angels obeyed, so they all prostrated as their Lord commanded them.
.
As for Iblis, who was with the angels but was not one himself, refused to prostrate to Adam along with the angels.
(al-Hijr:26-31)
.
The Origin of their Creation
.
Allah created the jinn from fire, as this is what has been revealed in the Qur’an:
.
“And the jinn, we created aforetime from the smokeless flame of fire”. (Surah al-Hijr, verse 27)
.
I created the father of the jinn from scolding fire before I created Adam (upon him be peace).
(Surah al-Hijr, verse 27)
.
“ And the jinn: He created from a smokeless flame of fire.” (Surah al-Rahman, verse 15)
.
He created Adam (peace be upon him) from dried clay that has a clatter like that of baked clay.
.
He created the father of the jinn from a flame that is pure of smoke.
.
Which of Allah’s numerous favours to you, O group of Jinn and men, do you deny?
(Surah Ar-Rahman:14-16)
.
The Prophet ﷺ said: “The angels were created from light, and the jinn from the smokeless flame of fire and Adam was created from that which has been described to you.” (Muslim)
.
The Types of Jinn
.
It has been reported in a hadith that the Prophet ﷺ said: “The jinn are of three types: a type which flies in the air, a type which are snakes and dogs and a type which resides and wanders.” (Hakim & al-Bayhaqi, authentic)
.
If one wishes to refer to a particular or single jinn he says: “jinni” and if he is referring to those of the jinn who live with people he says: “amir” and if he is discussing those of the jinn who present themselves to children he says: “arwah” they are evil and impious they are known as: “shaytan” and if they increase in their evil they are: “marid” and if it has the ability to move rocks etc it is: “
.
Ibn Taymiyyah said: “The jinn take the forms of men and animals, so they come in the appearance of snakes and scorpions and other than it, and in the form of camels, cows, sheep, horses, mules, donkeys and in the form of birds and men.”
.
He also says: “…and the jinn take its appearance often, meaning a black dog, likewise the appearance of a black cat, for the colour black agrees more with the strength of shaytan than other colours, and it also has hotness to it.”(Majmi Fatawa, vol. 19, p. 52)
.
Have the Jinn been Ordered to Follow the Shariah of Islam?
.
The only religion accepted by Allah is Islam, and the message of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is the final and everlasting message. It is a message for both mankind and the jinn, hence they have been ordered to follow it. From them are both believers and disbelievers, as Allah says:
.
There are among us some that are righteous, and some the contrary, we are groups having different ways (religious sects) (Surah Jinn, verse 11)
.
And that we – the group of jinn-: some of us are Allah-conscious and righteous whilst some of us are disbelievers and sinners. We are of different types and of diverse persuasions.
.
And that we are certain that we cannot escape Allah, may He be glorified, when He intends some matter for us. We will never be able to escape Him by fleeing because He surrounds us.
(Surah al-Jinn:11-12)
.
This is the Hell which the Mujrimun (polytheists, criminals, sinners) denied. They will go between it (Hell) and the fierce boiling water! Then which of the blessings of your Lord will you both (jinn and men) deny? (Surah al-Rahman, verses 43-45)
.
It will be said to them in rebuke: This is the Hell that the guilty ones used to reject in the world, which is before their eyes and which they are unable to deny.
.
They will go between it and water that is extremely hot.
.
Which of Allah’s numerous favours to you, O group of Jinn and men, do you deny?
(Surah Ar-Rahman:43-45)
.
The Prophet ﷺ conveyed this message to the jinn and warned them, as Allah has mentioned in His Book: And (remember) when We sent towards you (Muhammad) a group (three to ten persons) of the jinn, (quietly) listening to the Qur’an. When they stood in the presence thereof they said: “Listen in silence!” and when it was finished, they returned to their people, as warners. (Surah al-Ahqaf, verse 29)
.
Remember, O Messenger, when I sent to you a group of the jinn to listen to the Qur’an that was revealed to you. When they came to hear it they said to one another: Be quiet, so that we are able to hear it. When the Messenger (peace be upon him) completed his recitation they went back to their people to warn them of Allah’s punishment if they do not have faith in this Qur’an.
(al-Ahqaf:29)
.
The purpose of creation for mankind and the jinn is the worship of Allah alone, as He says: “And I (Allah) created not the jinn and mankind except that they should worship Me (Alone).” (Surah al-Dhariyat, verse 56)
(Adh-Dhariyat:56-58)
.
So from this it is known that the believing jinn will enter Paradise just like the believers from mankind, and their disbelievers will enter the Fire like the disbelievers from mankind. This has been mentioned by Allah in the Qur’an: But for him who fears the standing before his Lord, there will be two gardens (i.e. in Paradise) (Surah al-Rahman, verse 46)
.
Also ‘Abdullah ibn Mas’ud said,: “We were with the Prophet ﷺ one night, and we lost sight of him, so we searched for him in the valleys and mountain passes. We thought he had been kidnapped and spent the worst night a (group of) people can spend. The following morning he returned, and we said to him: ‘O Messenger ofAllah, we lost sight of you, then began to search for you but could not find you, and ended up spending the worst night a (group of) people can spend.’ He ﷺ replied: ‘A caller from the jinn came to me, so I went with him and recited the Qur’an to them.’ Ibn Masud continued: So he took us and showed us the traces and signs of them and their fire. They had asked him for provisions, so he said: ‘For every bone over which the name of Allah is mentioned, it will be for you the most plentiful ofmeat, likewise the droppings of animals for your animals.’ He ﷺ said: ‘Do not clean yourselves with them, for they are food for your brothers.” (Muslim, Sharh al-Nawawi)
.
The Dwellings of the Jinn and where they are Found
.
Some people believe that the jinn live underground, but what is correct is that they live on the face of the earth. They have many places of dwelling, however they are most commonly found in the following places:
.
Valleys, mountain passes, wildernesses and deserts – we have already mentioned the hadith of Ibn Mas’ud above, and how the Prophet ﷺ met the jinn in these kinds of places and preached Islam to them.
.
Rubbish heaps, bins and places where food is generally found.
.
Toilets – due to the hadtth of Zayd ibn Arqam, in which the Prophet ﷺ said: “Verily these spaces are occupied, so when one of you wants to relieve himself then let him say: (the below)”. (Abu Dawood)
.
(بِسْمِ اللَّهِ)
.
اللَّهُـمَّ إِنِّي أَعُـوذُ بِـكَ مِـنَ الْخُـبْثِ وَالْخَبَائِث
.
(Bismil-lah) allahumma innee aAAoothu bika minal-khubthi wal-khaba-ith
.
(Bismillaah) Allaahumma innii a’uudzu bika minal khubutsi wal khobaa-its.
.
(In the name of Allah). O Allah, I take refuge with you from all evil and evil-doers.
.
Caves, cleaves and burrows – for it is narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Do not urinate into a burrow. ” Qatadah was asked: “Why is it disliked to urinate into a burrow?” He replied: “It is said they are the dwellings of the jinn.” (An-Nisaii)
.
In people’s houses – these jinn are referred to as “amir’. The evidence for this is the story of the young man who found a jinni in his house in the form of a snake. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Indeed in Madtnah there are a number ofjinn who have accepted Islam, so whoever sees one of these ‘amirs then let him ask it to leave thrice. Ifit appears to him after this then let him kill it, for verily it is a devil (shaytan). ” (Muslim)
.
Camel pens – this is reported in the hadith of Abu Hurairah R.A. that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Pray in sheep pens but do not pray in camel pens.”(Tirmidhi) Another narration states “…for verily they (i.e. the camels) have been created from the shayatin. ” (Ahmad)
.
Abandoned places.
.
Graveyards. Ibn Taymiyyah stated: “…and this is why they are commonly found in ruins, wildernesses, and in places of filth such as toilets, and where rubbish is found. This is why those who co-operate with the shayatin increasingly go to these places which are the shelters of the shayatin.”
.
Market places – this is because sins such as lying, cheating, women uncovering etc. are common in these places. For this reason, the Prophet ﷺ advised Salman: “If you are able, do not be the first to enter the market, nor the last to leave it for verily it is the battlefield of shaytan and in it his flag is raised.” (Sahih Muslim)
.
Times when the Jinn Spread
.
On the authority of Jabir, the Prophet ﷺ said:
.
“When it is the beginning of the night, withhold your children for indeed it is during this time the shayatin disperse, so when a portion of the night passes then leave them, close the doors and mention the name ofAllah, for indeed shaytan cannot open a closed door. Tie the mouth of your water-skins and mention the name of Allah, and cover your vessels and mention the name of Allah. Cover them even by placing something across it, and extinguish your lights. ” (Bukhari)
.
“Do not send your cattle and your children out once the sun has set until the blackness of the evening disappears, for indeed the shayatin spread once the sun has set until the blackness of the evening disappears.” (Sahih Muslim)
.
These are the places in which the jinn dwell, and the times in which they spread, so if a person passes by any of these places or comes across one of these times then he should protect himself by reciting the appropriate du’as. These will be mentioned in the upcoming classes Insha Allah.
.
CLASS 2
.
THE PROTECTIVE SHIELD
.
We read yesterday about the Jinn and that they can enter into humans, but if we study the Sunnah we are taught ways to protect ourselves from evil. Listed below are actions mentioned in the authentic ahadeeth to be taken to protect ourselves from all evil.
.
Factors of Imaan that protects us.
How to dispel shaitaan in various aspects of life.
.
Ayahs for Protection and to repel shaitaan
.
Adhkaar for Protection
.
I. FACTORS OF IMAAN (FAITH) THAT CAN HELP PROTECT US
.
There are specific ayaat and adhkaar that can help us protect against the shayaateen, but if our imaan is low our shield will be weak. So first and foremost we should strengthen our imaan and then seek means. Amongst the factors of iman that can help protect us are:
.
Taqwa [fear of Allaah and piety- fulfilling what Allaah has commanded and keeping away from what Allaah has forbidden]. The one who fears Allaah will be protected and safeguarded by Allaah and will not be left to others. Allaah [The Most High] said: “But if you remain patient and become Al-Muttaqun(the pious), not the least harm will their cunning do to you. Surely, Allah surrounds all that they do”. (Soorah Aal Imraan Ayah 120)
.
If a blessing comes to you in the forms of victory over an enemy, or an increase in wealth or children, then worry and sadness overcomes them; and if a misfortune hits you, such as the victory of an enemy over you, or a decrease in wealth or children, then they are happy, rejoicing at your misfortune. If you are patient with Allah’s commands and decree, and are mindful of not earning Allah’s anger, then their tricks and attempts to hurt you will not harm you. Allah encompasses all their plotting and what they do, and will make them fail.
(Ali-Imran:120)
.
At-Tawakkul – Reliance upon Allaah.
.
Whoever relies upon Allaah, Allaah will suffice him. Reliance upon Allaah is one of the most powerful means by way of which a person is protected regardless the extent of the harm, oppression, and enmity of the creation. The one who suffices himself with Allaah [as his Protector], the enemy cannot have any hope of [harming him]. If a person relies upon Allaah, in a manner in which Allaah deserves to be relied upon and [firmly believes in Allaah’s absolute control] of the heavens and the earth and all that is in them, Allaah will grant him a way out [from the difficulty or harm] and aid help him.
.
Repentance – sins are the cause behind being overpowered by one’s enemy.
.
Indeed Allaah said: And whatever of misfortune befalls you, it is because of what your hands have earned. (42:30)]
.
Whatever difficulty afflicts you, O people, in yourselves and your wealth it is because of the sins that your hands earned. Allah overlooks many of them and does not take you to task for them.
(Ash-Shura:30)
.
A servant (of Allaah) is not overpowered by someone who harms him except due to sin, whether he is aware or unaware of it. The sins of a person – which he is unaware of- are several times as much as what he knows, and the sins he has forgotten – which he is aware of and committed – are several times as much as what he can remember.
.
Tawheed – [i.e. firm belief that Allaah alone is the Creator of everything, the Provider and the one Who controls everything in the universe; firm belief in Allaah’s Perfect Names and Attributes and that there is no similarity to Allaah; firm belief that none has the right to be worshipped except Allaah], constantly attaching oneself to Allaah-The One Who created all the means to accomplishing what one seeks, The All-Mighty, The All-Wise- whilst giving consideration to the means of attaining protection and to know that nothing can bring harm or benefit, except by the permission of Allaah
.
Allaah (The Most High) said:
.
And if Allah touches you with hurt, there is none who can remove it but He; and if He intends any good for you, there is none who can repel His Favour which He causes it to reach whomsoever of His slaves He will. (10:107)]
.
If Allah afflicts you, O Messenger, with a disaster and you desire to remove it, then know that no one can remove it except Him, may He be glorified. If He wants ease for you, then there is no one who can repel His grace. He makes His grace reach whomever He wills of His servants. No one can compel Him. He is Forgiving and Merciful to those of His servants who repent to Him.
(Surah Yunus:107)
.
The Prophet ﷺ said to Ibn Abbaas [radiyallaahu-anhumaa],
.
‘’Know that even if the Nation [or the whole community] were to gather together to benefit you with something, they would not benefit you with anything except that which Allah has already decreed for you, and that if they gather together to harm you with something, they would not be able to harm you with anything except that which Allah has already decreed against you”.
.
If a person fulfils Tawheed, then indeed fear of other than Allaah will be removed from his heart. His enemy will be the weakest thing to him let alone something to be feared alongside his fear of Allaah. He will fear Allaah alone [and no one else]. He will find that his thoughts about the affair of his enemy, fear of his enemy and busying himself with the affair of his enemy is due to a deficiency in his [belief in] Tawheed. Had he been perfecting [his belief in] Tawheed, it would have been the uppermost thing in his mind and that Allaah is the One Who will protect and defend him, for indeed Allaah defends those who [truly] believe. If a person is a [true] believer, Allaah will defend him based on the level [or strength of] his belief [in Allaah]. Tawheed is the greatest shield and whoever embraces it will be amongst those who are safeguarded. Some of the pious predecessors [i.e. the Sahaabah and the two generations who followed them exactly in belief, practice, and piety] said, “Whoever truly fears Allaah, everything will fear him; and whoever does not fear Allaah, Allaah will make him fear everything”.
.
II. TO SEEK REFUGE IN ALLAH FROM SHYTAAN
.
To seek refuge in the complete words of Allah every time one descends from a place
.
أَعـوذُ بِكَلِـماتِ اللّهِ التّـامّاتِ مِنْ شَـرِّ ما خَلَـق
.
‘A’oothu bikalimaatil-laahit-taammaati min sharri maa khalaq.
.
I seek refuge in the Perfect Words of Allah from the evil of what He has created.
.
Khawlah bint Hakim narrated that she heard the Prophet ﷺ say: “Whoever descends in a place and says (the above) will not be harmed by anything until he leaves that place. ” (Sahih Muslim)
.
Abu Hurairah narrated that a man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: “O Messenger of Allah, I have suffered greatly from a scorpion which stung me last night, so the Prophet ﷺ said: ‘You should have said in the evening, (the above mentioned dua).’” (Sahih Muslim)
.
Shaykh Ibn Baz said: “Bismillah” should be said in the day and in the night, when a person enters a place or a building. It should be said in the desert, in the air and on sea.
.
We have already mentioned that the jinn dwell in the deserts, wildernesses and in valleys so the Muslim should recite these du’as when he passes by these places.
.
To seek refuge in the Words of Allah whenever one is frightened
.
.
A’oodhu bi kalimat-illah il-tammati min ghadabihi wa ‘iqabihi, wa min sharri ‘ibadihi wa min hamazat al-shayateeni wa an yahduroon
.
I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from His wrath and punishment, from the evil of His slaves and from the evil promptings of the devils and from their presence. (Abu Dawood)
.
Allah says: And say: “My Lord! I seek refuge with You from the whisperings of the shayatin (devils). And I seek refuge with You, My Lord! Lest they should come near me. ” (Surah al-Mu’minun, verses 97-98)
.
O Messenger, repel the one who is bad to you by the characteristic which is better, namely turning away from him and being patient with his harm. I know best the associating partners and denial they describe, and the unbefitting things they describe you with such as magic and insanity.
.
And say: “O Lord, I seek protection in You against the evil suggestions of the satans and their whisperings.
.
And I seek refuge in You that they should be present with me in any of my affairs”.
(Surah al-Mu’minun:96-98)
.
The reason for this is that when a person is frightened, his heart becomes weak and shaytan gains strength over him and is able to enter him. For this reason, it is recommended to seek refuge from them in this situation.
.
To say a hundred times a day
.
.
‘None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, alone, without partner, to Him belongs all sovereignty and praise, and He is over all things omnipotent.’
.
The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever says (the above) a hundred times, will have the reward of freeing ten slaves, one hundred good deeds will be written for him, and a hundred bad deeds will be wiped away. It will be a protection from shaytan for that day until the evening, and no-one will have come with better than him except one who does more than this. Whoever says ‘Glorified is Allah, ‘None has the right to be worshipped but Allah Alone, He has no partner, for Him is the dominion and for Him is all Praise, and He is Able to do all things and all Praise be to Him’ a hundred times a day will have his sins wiped away, even if they are like the froth of the sea”. (Sahih Bukhari)
.
Dispelling shaytan when entering the house
.
Jabir reported that he heard the Prophet ﷺ say: “If a person remembers Allah when he enters his house and when he eats, shaytan will say (to the devils), ‘There is neither dinner nor a place to sleep for you.’ If one enters and does not mention Allah, shaytan says: ‘You have found a place for the night/ and if one does not mention Allah when he eats, shaytan says, ‘You have found a place to sleep and dinner.” (Sahih Muslim)
.
Dispelling Shaytaan when leaving the house
.
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ تَوَكَّلْـتُ عَلَى اللَّهِ، وَلاَ حَوْلَ وَلاَ قُـوَّةَ إِلاَّ بِاللَّهِ.
.
Bismil-lah, tawakkaltu AAalal-lah, wala hawla wala quwwata illa billah.
.
In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah, and there is no might nor power except with Allah.
.
On the authority of Anas that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever says (the above) – when he leaves his house – It will be said to him: itis sufficient (as protection for you) and you have been guided, and shaytan will leave him.” (Abu Dawood & Tirmidhi)
.
Dispelling Shaitaan before intercourse
.
بسم الله، اللهم جنبنا الشيطان وجنب الشيطان ما رزقتنا
.
“Bismillah! Allahumma janibnash-Shaitana, wa jannibish-Shaitana ma razaqtana
.
In the Name of Allah, O Allah! Keep us away from Satan and keep Satan away from what You have bestowed upon us
.
The Prophet ﷺ said, “If anyone intends to have (sexual intercourse) with his wife, he should say (the above) and if Allah has ordained a child for them, Satan will never harm him.” (Bukhari & Muslim)
.
Dispelling Shaytaan before entering the toilet
.
(بِسْمِ اللَّهِ). اللَّهُـمَّ إِنِّي أَعُـوذُ بِـكَ مِـنَ الْخُـبْثِ وَالْخَبَائِثِ.
.
(Bismil-lah) allahumma innee aAAoothu bika minal-khubthi wal-khaba-ith
.
(In the name of Allah). O Allah, I take refuge with you from all evil and evil-doers.
.
Anas narrated that the Prophet ﷺ used to say (the above) when entering the toilet. It has already been mentioned that the jinn dwell and are found in these types of places, so the Muslim should always remember this dua.
